by David A. Enyart
This work defines preaching as “the integrating of God’s Story, the preacher’s story, and the congregation’s story so that souls are saved, wounds are healed and Christ is exalted.” Preachers have the honor of declaring God’s coming into the world in the person of the resurrected Jesus Christ. Dr. Enyart asserts that all pulpit communicators have innate strengths and weaknesses. Though not equally gifted, each preacher is capable of giving God his personal best. As proclaimers, overcoming individual weaknesses and maximizing strengths is a lifetime project. Interpreting and applying the text of Scripture is a Spirit-guided enterprise; it demands intelligence, skill, and hard work. If the preacher shortcuts the process, God is not glorified and listeners are not blessed. The Homiletical Review Notebook assists preachers in creating sermons that connect Bible and Life. To those who would preach, this volume says, “Give it your best!” Dr. David A. Enyart is Professor of Pastoral Ministries and Bible at Johnson Bible College, Knoxville, Tennessee.
