Including both the Life of Governor Jaques Dupré and the Santa Fe Expeditions of Pierre Mallet

By Ann Dubuisson

The life stories of some of the most fascinating people ever to settle Louisiana

This family history follows the Dupré male line to the 20th century, and gives the full family history of each of their wives, generally back to the first ancestors to arrive in America. Facts and dates are footnoted as to sources. It is divided into 4 parts, fully indexed.

Part I. Louis LeComte Dupré (1654–1715) arrived in Canada by 1672, was a fur merchant, the 2nd seigneur of Terrebonne, and married Marie Catherine Rolland de St. George. Jacques Dupré dit Terrebonne married Anne Marie Bienvenu in Illinois in 1722. They were in Louisiana in 1724. Son Laurent married Marie Joseph Fontenot and came to the Opelousas Country. Son Antoine married Marie Anne Gaudin and settled on the German Coast. Guillaume Dupre Terrebonne married Francesca Margota and started the Terrebonne branch. Marie Jeanne married Laurent Lerable of New Orleans. Marie Louise married the explorer Pierre Mallet. There is the story of Marie Joseph Fontenot’s family from Ft. Toulouse to the Alabama settlers’ move to Louisiana, including Grand Louis Fontenot and the LaGrange, Doucet and Brignac ancestors.

Part II. Jaques Dupré (1773–1846) was said to be the largest cattle owner in Louisiana, and married Theotiste Roy. Her family histories are all set forth: Roy dit Chatellerault, Janvier, Dubois, Brett, Lacour, Bordelon, Rolland, Rondot and Colon. Here are stories of Laurent Dupré and Marie Joseph Pitre, Antoine Dupré and Eugenie Savoye, and Eugenie Dupré and Nicholas Bordelon, and those of Lastie Dupré and Marie Tonton Berard, and Cyprien Dupré (1801–1864) and Marcelite Guidry. Histories of Marcelite’s Acadian ancestors are set forth. The next chapters are on Lucius Jacques Dupré, CSA, (1822–1869) and Caroline Vanhille.

Part III. This part starts with Laurent Dupré (1849–1905) who was too young to fight in the Civil War. He was an attorney in Opelousas and married Marie Celeste Garland. Her Garland, Rice, Hamner, Lastrapes, Boisdore, Veillon, Aubert, Adams, Bullard, Davenport and Keiser family stories are all told here.

Part IV. Rosa Lastrapes Dupré (1878–1973) married Edward Benjamin Dubuisson. This part is about their family and the ancestors of E. B. Dubuisson, including histories of Gabriel Fuselier de la Claire and Helene Soileau, and her Soileau, Richaume and Guillory families and the Stagg and Stoutenburgh families.

Appendices includes copies of many signatures and succession papers, a full translation of Pierre Mallet’s first two expeditions to Santa Fe in 1739 and 1741, and the story of his other adventures. There are 58 Family Sheets, 13 Ancestor Charts, 64 maps, illustrations, portraits, and photographs of people, homes, and letters, including letters of Gov. Jaques, Cyprien and Lastie Dupré to Governor Alexandre Mouton.

Since each child seems to have had many children, the Duprés were soon interrelated to almost all old families of the area. It is truly the story of the people who settled Southwest Louisiana.
